I peek one dry eye open, and sure enough, the knocking is not part of my dream. With a grunt, I push up into a sitting position and swing my legs over the edge of the bed. My pants are laying on the floor in the middle of the room where I pulled them off and dropped them the night before.

I shuffle over and pull them on. The knocking increases in urgency and I smooth my hair down as I hurry toward the door. Through the peephole I see a young, slender guy wearing an actual cape. There’s no doubt in my mind Adrian sent him. I pull the door open.

“What?” I demand, my head still aching from last night’s drinking and the rude awakening.

The boy bows and holds out the rectangular, black velvet pillow in his hands toward me. Perched on the top of the pillow is a blood-red envelope, my full name written in calligraphy on the front, and a single white rose.

Adrian certainly has style. I pick up the envelope and the rose. The boy stands abruptly and walks away without uttering a single word.

“So weird,” I mutter as I shut the door.

The envelope shimmers as I examine it. The back is sealed in black wax that is stamped with a rose. I dig my nail under the wax and open it. It’s stuffed full with a thick letter. Adrian must be as talkative in letters as he is in real life.

I plop down on the sofa in the sitting area and pull out the thick parchment. As I unfold it another piece of paper falls out. I set it aside and read Adrian’s letter first.
